About Kestrel

Who is Kestrel?

A pioneer of Washington Wine Country, John J. Walker, our founder and a visionary, envisioned that Yakima Valley would produce the fruit that would build wines of premium calibur.  His wish, to set great wines on everyone's table.  Hence, the reason he purchased our Vineyards, Kestrel View Estate, in 1995.

His vision came to further fruition when we opened our winery in early 1999 on three acres in the Prosser Wine and Food Park.

Our flagship winery and production facility is 15,000 square feet, which includes a 13,500 square foot cellar, tank, warehouse and barrel area as well as a 1,500 square foot tasting room, gift shop and office.  Great wine can only come from great fruit, that coupled with a state-of-the-art production facility and our renowned winemaker Flint Nelson we have the perfect opportunity to make amazing wines.

We opened our doors as a 3,000 case winery and are now at approximately 35,000 cases.

We are predominately a red wine producer: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Mourvedre and Sangiovese are some of our full varietal red wines.  Kestrel is also known for white wines of which we also produce a variance: Old Vine Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Pinot Gris are some of our full varietal whites.   Blends are also produced by Flint.  They vary year-to-year and carefully crafted to show the best possible mix of different varietals. We make a Bordeax style blend, "Raptor Red", our pinnacle wine, named for the Genus of our namesake the Kestrel Falcon and a Falcon Series wine called "Tribute" named in honor of our founder John Walker.   Our Falcon series wines are the heart-beat of our brand because these wines can be purchased at an everyday price-point "We make wines for birthdays, anniversaries and Mondays." says Flint Nelson.  We also produce a series we call the Artist's Series; Lady in Red and Lady in White, both blended to appeal to all levels of consumers.

Barrel aging plays an important part in our wine production. Our wines are aged one-to-two years in the finest French, American and Hungarian oak barrels and provided bottle aging prior to release.

Philosophy

Our philosophy is to produce fruit and wines of the highest quality. Kestrel uses all the fruit to craft wines in a multi-tiered system, every grape intended to go into the Signature Series.  Flint carefully decides what tier each grape is best suited and our team markets them creatively to the surprise and delight of our customers.
